Forest Industry

Port Alberni Terminals has historically operated as a mixed forest products facility and is capable of handling lumber, pulp, newsprint, plywood & timber. Cargo volumes through the Port have experienced significant fluctuations in recent years due to changes in market conditions, and the logistics and distribution decisions of the local forest industry clients. The shipping volumes at Port Alberni Terminals have been contingent on the strength of the local forest sector.

In 2007, the Province of British Columbia published a report on the policy of exporting un-manufactured timber. Furthermore, the Province conducted a focused review of the forest industry in the Alberni Valley. Government initiatives resulting from these reports could have significant impacts on the future of the coastal forest sector in terms of harvesting levels, timber flow, and the viability of local manufacturing operations. The success of the local forest sector is paramount to the revenue streams of Port Alberni Terminals. The Port Authority will continue to seek active involvement and input to the Province’s investigations and resulting initiatives.
